European tree-ring isotopes indicate unusual recent hydroclimate

چکیده
Abstract In recent decades, Europe has experienced more frequent flood and drought events. However, little is known about the long-term, spatiotemporal hydroclimatic changes across Europe. Here we present a climate field reconstruction spanning entire European continent based on tree-ring stable isotopes. A pronounced seasonal consistency in response leads to unique, well-verified spatial of summer hydroclimate back AD 1600. We find three distinct phases variability as possible fingerprints solar activity (coinciding with Maunder Minimum end Little Ice Age) decadal superimposed by long-term drying trend from mid-20th century. show that (2015–2018) highly unusual multi-century context unprecedented for large parts central western The provides further evidence droughts potentially being influenced anthropogenic warming draws attention regional differences.

Pooled versus separate measurements of tree-ring stable isotopes.
δ(13)C and δ(18)O of tree rings contain time integrated information about the environmental conditions weighted by seasonal growth dynamics and are well established as sources of palaeoclimatic and ecophysiological data. Annually resolved isotope chronologies are frequently produced by pooling dated growth rings from several trees prior to the isotopic analyses. This procedure has the advantage...
متن کاملA Mechanisms-Based Approach to Detecting Recent Anthropogenic Hydroclimate Change*
Both naturally occurring La Niña events and model-projected anthropogenic-driven global warming are associated with widespread drying in the subtropics to midlatitudes. Models suggest anthropogenic drying should already be underway but climate variability on interannual to multidecadal time scales can easily obscure any emerging trend, making it hard to assess the validity of the simulated forc...
متن کاملStable isotopes in tree rings
Stable isotopes in tree rings could provide palaeoclimate reconstructions with perfect annual resolution and statistically defined confidence limits. Recent advances make the approach viable for non-specialist laboratories. The relevant literature is, however, spread across several disciplines, with common problems approached in different ways. Here we provide the first overview of isotope dend...
متن کاملRobust Tree-Ring Detection
The study of tree-rings is a common task in dendrology. Usually the rings deliver information about the age of the tree, historic climate conditions and forest densities. Many different techniques exist to perform the tree-ring detection, but they commonly are semi-automatic. The main idea of this work is to propose an automatic process for the tree-ring detection and compare it with a manual d...
